New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel creates history at Wankhede, takes 10 wicket haul

Mumbai born New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel scripted his name in the history of Test cricket on Saturday. He became the third cricketer to take 10 wickets in an innings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Jim Laker and Anil Kumble have already achieved this feat.

Ajaz touched the peak of 10 wickets with the wicket of Mohammad Siraj. On the second day of the Wankhede Test, he placed hinself with Jim Laker and Anil Kumble. At Old Trafford in 1956, Laker took 10 wickets for 53 runs and in New Delhi, on the other hand, Anil Kumble took 10 wickets for 64 runs in 26.3 overs in 1999.

This is the first time that 33-year-old Ajaz has come to India to play. He migrated from Mumbai to New Zealand when he was only 8 years old. Although India got off to a good start on the first day, Ajaz single-handedly changed the color of the match on the second day. On Saturday, he finished India’s innings alone.

Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer were Ajaz’s wickets on the first day of the match. On Saturday, he took wickets of Wriddhiman Saha, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mayank Agarwal, Axar Patel, Jayant Yadav and Mohammad Siraj.

Except for Mayank Agarwal and Axar Patel, no one was able to face Ajaz properly. At the end of the first day, Ajaz Patel said, “In Test cricket, one has to focus on one thing. If the ball can be kept in the same place for a long time, then the reward will be given.’

He further added, ‘Today was my day. I consider myself extremely lucky to have played in this Test. I have taken four wickets today. I am very happy with this success. Being my hometown, success in Wankhede will always be special to me.’

After two days of rain, Mumbai’s wicket looked a bit dry on the second day of the Test match. Needless to say, this situation of wickets in the western port city of the country is ideal for spinners. And Ajaz Patel has used that opportunity to the fullest.
