Five Month Old UK Infant is Slowly ‘Turning into Stone’

News Desk: A five-month-old baby girl from the United Kingdom is gradually “turning to a stone” because of an extremely unusual genetic ailment that transforms muscles into bones.

Lexi Robins, born on January 31, appeared like any other normal infant, except she was not able to move her thumb and had larger toes.

Her anxious parents took her to the physicians. After some time Lexi was diagnosed with a extremely rare disorder called Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP), which impacts on barely one in two million.

Her X-ray reports indicated that she had bunions on her feet and double-jointed thumbs.

The FOP can steer bone formation outside skeleton and reduce the ability to move. It is supposed to supplant muscles and connective tissues, such as tendons and ligaments, with bone and that is why it is assumed that the affected person’s body turns into a stone.

People with this disorder, can be bedridden by the age of 20 and has life expectancy of just 40 years. There is no treatment so far,.

Due to the ailment, Lexi’s situation may worsen quickly if she endures any minor injury, like falling down. She cannot take injections, vaccinations and dental care and cannot also give birth.

“We were initially told, after the x-rays, she probably had a syndrome and wouldn’t walk. We just didn’t believe that because she’s so strong physically at the moment and she’s just kicking her legs,” said Lexi’s mother Alex.

“She’s absolutely brilliant. She sleeps through the night, she smiles and laughs constantly, hardly ever cries. That’s the way we want to keep her,” she told.

Lexi’s parents have commenced a fundraiser for investigation to find a remedy for Lexi. They are also operating an awareness campaign to alert other parents whose children might have been detected with this disease.
